Blood. Anywhere. When it Matters Most.

BODIE manufactures lifesaving red blood cells at the point of care—eliminating fragile supply chains and ensuring critical blood is available in the most remote, austere, and contested environments.

One donor. Up to 150 patients.

A force-multiplying capability for warfighters, disaster response, and emergency medicine.

Facing a quiet but persistent Blood Crisis

Every day, trauma victims, wounded service members, cancer patients, and children with chronic blood disorders depend on a supply of blood that is often unavailable when and where it is needed most. Donations are limited, blood expires quickly, and emergencies rarely happen near major hospitals. But there is a transformative opportunity: using stem cells from a single volunteer donor, it is possible to manufacture enough red blood cells to treat up to 150 patients. One person—150 lives. This capability has the potential to save lives on the battlefield, stabilize disaster response, and ensure that no American dies simply because compatible blood could not reach them in time.

For America’s warfighters, this capability is especially critical. Uncontrolled hemorrhage remains the leading cause of preventable death on the battlefield, often within the first hour after injury. The ability to manufacture blood at or near the point of care would fundamentally change combat casualty survival—reducing dependence on vulnerable supply chains and ensuring that wounded service members receive life-saving transfusions when minutes matter most. The vast distances of the INDOPACOM theater and the threat of contested logistics make this an urgent need. This is not just a medical advance; it is a force-multiplier that honors our commitment to bring every warrior home.

Bodie Delivers a Solution

The Blood On Demand Integrated Everywhere (BODIE) delivers a rugged, automated system that can manufacture red blood cells and other blood components wherever they are needed—including remote, austere, or contested environments. The platform is designed for field use, allowing trained enlisted medics to safely produce life-saving blood without reliance on fragile supply chains. BODIE has demonstrated reliable operation in a wide range of conditions, including successful performance in

–40°C cold-weather and in tropical latitudes and conditions in Hawaii. This initiative extends proven deployable biomanufacturing technologies into a scalable, autonomous capability that directly strengthens the Department of Defense’s ability to save lives at the point of injury.

The vision of BODIE is to create a distributed, resilient, and adaptable blood manufacturing capability that ensures lifesaving blood is available wherever it is needed—regardless of location, environment, or logistical constraints. The initiative aims to:

  • Provide clean, fresh blood at the  point of need, eliminating reliance on long-distance transport and fragile cold chains.
  • Enable distributed manufacturing so that blood products can be produced at bases, on ships, in remote regions, or in forward operating positions.
  • Make blood production accessible, with systems designed for operation by enlisted personnel using intuitive workflows, AI support, and  automated quality controls.
  • Strengthen both military and  civilian medical systems, offering a scalable capability for remote communities, disaster response, and emergency preparedness.
  • Demonstrate a rugged, adaptable  platform that maintains performance across extreme environmental conditions,  ensuring reliability in any operational context.
